Zack’s Turbo Mirage Setup

I get countless PM’s and IM’s about my turbo setup. So I’m going to take some tell and mention every part
and explain the setup.

I should have done this a long time ago, but just never sat down and did it. This is how the car ENDED. Not Started. I went through about 5 different setups before i was completely happy.

RPW Turbo Manifold/Downpipe. (Ported to Match Turbo inlet/outlet)
Garrett GT-25 Dual Ball Bearing Turbo w/ Internal Gate
Evo VIII FMIC
FSE Fuel Pressure Regulator (would go a different route next time)
HKS SSQV Blow Off Valve. Vent To Atmosphere.
310cc Mivec Injectors
Eurotech Mandrel Bent Hot and Cold Pipes.
Greddy E-Manage
-Injector Harness
-Timing Harness
-Boost Pressure Sensor

I tapped the heater core in and out for the waterlines on the turbo. I T’d into the Oil Pressure Sending Unit
for the oil into the turbo, and tapped the oilpan for the oil return. I kept powersteering and a/c for the entire life
of the turbo. With this setup, I managed 180 whp. (201 on spray).

Q & A Time. ( Added parts to list as well,)
Q. Did the car have stock internals?
A. Yes. I DID however have forged internals sitting in my garage, as well as a DOHC head, but those plans never came to life. Parted the car out before I had a chance to get really crazy with her.

Q. What were the 1/4 mile times?
A. I’m sorry to say I never ran the car at the track. Even tho it’s walking distance from my house.

Q. How the &@(# did you get a 65-mm TB on a 1.5L intake manifold?
A. Well.. We hacked a 1.8 intake manifold then hacked a 1.5L manifold, then welded. Unfortunately I have no pics. We scrapped all of that after a while, because it looked so damn ghetto.

Q. What size exhaust?
A. 2.5in Mandrel Bends.

Q. Stock Cams?
A. Yeah. Cams were stock, but I DID have stage 2 turbo cams in the DOHC head that never surfaced.

Q. How long did the stock clutch last, and what did you replace it with when it did fail?
A. Heh. The stock clutch lasted around 1k miles. I replaced it with a CenterForce Dual Friction Clutch with was amazing. I really liked that clutch and had NO problems with it.

Q. What did of issues/problems did you have to deal with/overcome.
A. This is a long one. The biggest problem I had was ignition relation. I went through about 10 sets of spark plugs before I Realized that the ignition system need some work. At that point I went with the MSD Setup. Tuning was always a constant battle. I still wasn’t completely happy with the outcome. I knew there was more left in her, but finding money for dyno time wasn’t as easy as I hoped. Also, (this also addresses GinSonic’s Q’s regarding the FSE FPR) trying to tune with the E-Manage is IMPOSSIBLE with a rising rate FPR. It took us a long time to realize that was causing our issues. We eventually just capped the vacuum lines going into the FPR. This just allowed us to INCREASE fuel pressure with out it automatically adjusting for boost. We wanted to do that with the E-Manage. If I were to build another 1.5 I Would you a NON-RISING-RATE FPR.

Q. Why ONE pull with NOS?
A. A few reasons. I REALLY REALLY REALLY Wanted to break the 200whp barrier. Also, i would have kept the NOS on, but my injectors with at 90% duty cycle when we fired it. I wanted to keep it, but at the time, there were no bigger injectors around, I ended up selling the kit to Gregg.

Looks like that Leaked WWDC Leopard DVD was legit. However, I’m very curious as to why the pics posted in this photoset are taken with a crappy PDA camera. Make’s me a little suspicious.

Did Apple leave “Grab” out of Leopard?
