Official Facebook News Feed Stance
I understand the necessity of change. Improvements and enhancements are what set quality websites apart from the lesser ones. Without change the internet would become stagnent and repel those who embraced it from the beginning.
That being said, I welcome the new Facebook features. However, the News Feed feels unpolished and unfinished. I am being overloaded with informaion that I am not asking for. If they are trying to improve MY experience, they should ask me what _I_ want. It does not feel like the quality product that the Facebook Team would employ. I would like to see an entire preference pane devoted to the Feeds. Customization is a must, it is MY feed after all. The News Feed feels like a very late stage Alpha Release, or maybe early Beta.
Also, I need to be able to decided what is syndicated to others. Just because information is technically public, doesn’t mean I want it broadcasted over the waves. This user-unfriendly information overload isn’t exactly Web 2.0. I did NOT recieve Matt Born’s Note on my News Feed, as much as I would have liked to, because we are not in the same network. Who says friends have to attend the same college.
There were a number of Facebook Enhancements that went unnoticed at the time of the Feeds Launch, as well. My favorite being that I can see what information was edited on a friends profile while browsing My Recently Updated Friends.
My official stance: Wonderful Concept, Terrible Execution. We need choices Facebook, besides of course, “Go For It,” and “Awesome.”
